What is MEDIHONEY®, Apinate Dressing?

All of the products in the Derma Sciences MEDIHONEY range contain Medihoney Antibacterial Honey, which is a standard medical grade of antibacterial honey collected predominantly from Leptospermum scoparium bush (also known as Manuka.) This combination of Leptospermum honey has been put together using advanced scientific knowledge to maximise honey's potential to heal.

How to use Medihoney® Apinate Dressing?

  • If required protect the wound edges with MEDIHONEY® Barrier cream.
  • The Gel Sheet Dressing has protective liners on either side of the dressing. Remove these prior to use.
  • Place the dressing onto the wound surface ensuring that the dressing is in contact with the wound bed. Dressings can be placed alongside or on top of one another to cover large or deep areas. Alternatively the wound may be filled with MEDIHONEY® Antibacterial Medical Honey before applying the Dressing. The Dressing may be cut with sterile scissors or folded to the shape of the wound.
  • A suitable sterile secondary dressing should be applied to cover the MEDIHONEY® Dressing. The secondary dressing should be sufficiently absorbent to manage wound exudate.
  • The wound may be cleaned between dressing changes in accordance with standard wound cleaning protocol.

Suitable for use under compression dressings.

Frequency of change

  • The MEDIHONEY® Dressings require changing when they have been diluted by wound exudate and/or when the dressing has gelled. The dressings may be left in place for up to 7 days depending on the amount of wound exudate.
  • All  MEDIHONEY® Dressings are non-adherent and therefore easy to remove without disrupting the wound bed and new tissue.
  • Heavily exudating wounds require close monitoring and may require daily dressing changes.

Safety precautious

Do not use on individuals who have a known sensitivity to any component present in the dressing.

The wound may appear larger in size and depth as dead tissue is cleaned away. This increase should be followed by an improved appearance of the wound.

  • Transient stinging may be experienced on application of this product. This is due to the natural properties of the honey and is not detrimental to the wound. If transient stinging persists and cannot be managed with an analgesic after 30 minutes, remove the dressing and wash the affected area.
  • When used on dry wounds it may be helpful to moisten the dressing to aid removal.
  • Use with caution on heavily bleeding wounds
